Kuala Lumpur Malaysia: recent, a new type of crime surfaced. Somebody slips a mobile phone into your pocket, or a wallet with an ID card and a few banknotes. A few minutes later, the “owner” comes up and confronts you, the “thief.” He creates a big commotion that you stole his belongings. You, caught unawares, are then pulled aside by the “owner,” and pressurised for a settlement. You are intimidated and threatened that if you do not pay up, the police will be involved. If you pay up, the “owner” lets you go, if not the police are brought in.

Coincidentally there is always a witness to your so-called crime available. Favourite locations are KL International Airport and the KL mass transit system. In Malaysia there is greater pressure, as there you are presumed guilty and have to prove your own innocence, not easy given this scenario.

A variation is where the phone or wallet is introduced into the luggage trolley of a newly-arrived visitor. A similar incident unfolds.
